Is the state of 'trance' harmful in any way?

(Click here to return to previous page)

This naturally depends on the type of trance. The negative trance
is a result of stimulation of the sympathetic branch of the autonomic
nervous system. It is a basically a condition in which the nervous
system has been aroused to 'fight' or 'flight' but is not permitted
to do either. In a mild form it could feel exciting & exhilarating,
in an extreme form, it could be frightening, bordering on panic.

On the other hand, the positive hypnotic trance is a profoundly
relaxed state caused by stimulation of the parasympathetic branch
of the autonomic nervous system which can result in a condition
of inner tranquillity, balance & harmony. It is a mind-body state
in which disturbing factors are at a minimum & the body's restorative
and recuperative powers are at a maximum or optimum level. It
is the ultimate type of rest cure. There are no medical contraindications
to the positive trance.

All trance states of whichever type and however induced, are temporary
in nature and cannot be supported indefinitely. The nervous system
will eventually normalize itself.
