What is a Hypnotic Trance?

A 'trance' is a mind-body condition of temporary neurological modification
brought about by a stimulation of either the sympathetic or parasympathetic
branches of the autonomic nervous system.

A trance is not a state of either coma, sleep or unconsciousness. It is neither
a fully alert state or an unconscious one, but can best be described as an
'off conscious' state in which there is an increased susceptibility to suggestion.
A trance can be produced in many ways such as by disease, drugs or suggestion.

A hypnotic trance is brought about by means of a variety of inter-personal
methods known as inductions which include the use of appropriate suggestions,
matching of body language such as the rate of breathing as well as
techniques of progressive relaxation.
