There are many techniques by which this may be accomplished such as simple count down, synchronised with one's breathing, from ten to one. There are some quite subtle changes in body posture and physiology which accompany in the shift in awareness which accompanies the onset of the hypnotic state. These are typically as follows: a slowing down of the breathing, a decrease in heart rate, a relaxation of the facial muscles leading to an opening of the mouth and the face taking on an ironed out expression. There can be a loss of the swallow reflex that together with an opening of the mouth may lead to the emergence of saliva particularly if the hypnotic state is prolonged. The above changes are reversed upon return to normal waking consciousness.
