Are all trances essentially the same?

The word 'trance' is frequently misused to apply to a range of
semi-consciousness, dazed or stuporous conditions.

A hypnotic trance is a neurological phenomenon. If it is the result
of stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, by means of
intensifying disturbing emotions, it is called a 'ergotropic' or
negative trance. If it is the result of stimulation of the
parasympathetic nervous by means of comforting emotions, it
is called a 'trophotropic' or positive trance.

A person may be frightened or 'worked-up' into a negative trance
which is the type brought on by drums, traumatic experiences etc.
Such negative trances are often characterized by frenzied body
movements & mental disorientation of an extreme kind.

On the other hand, the positive trance is a comfortable & relaxed
state. A person is soothed and lulled into it. It is this positive
modern trance which is used almost exclusively by modern
hypnotherapists for beneficial purposes.
